The Doctrine of the Five Fires
(Chapter 5)
Prapāṭhaka 5: Pañcāgni Vidyā ( Five Fires)
Verse 1
śvetaketur hāruṇeyaḥ pañcālāṃ samitimeyāya taṃ ha pravāhaṇo jaivaliruvāca kumārānu tvāśiṣat pitetyanu hi bhagava iti
Svetaketu, the grandson of Aruna, came to the assembly of the Panchalas. Pravahana, the son of Jivala, said to him: Boy, did your father instruct you? Yes, revered sir, he replied.
Verse 2
vettha yadito'dhi prajāḥ prayantīti na bhagava iti vettha yathā punarāvartanta3 iti na bhagava iti vettha pathor devayānasya pitṛyāṇasya ca vyāvartanā3 iti na bhagava iti
Do you know where creatures go from here when they die? No, revered sir. Do you know how they return again? No, revered sir. Do you know where the two paths—the path of the gods and the path of the fathers—diverge? No, revered sir.
Verse 3
vettha yathāsau loko na sampūryata3 iti na bhagava iti vettha yathā pañcamyām āhutāv āpaḥ puruṣavacaso bhavantīti naiva bhagava iti
Do you know why that yonder world does not become filled up? No, revered sir. Do you know how, at the fifth oblation, water comes to be called a human being? No, indeed, revered sir.
Verse 4
athānu kim anuśiṣṭo'vocathā yo hīmāni na vidyāt kathaṃ so'nuśiṣṭo bruvītet sa hāyastaḥ piturardhameyāya taṃ hovācānanuśiṣya vāva kila mā bhagavān bravīdanu tvāśiṣam iti
Then why did you say that you were instructed? For how could anyone who does not know these things claim to be instructed? Distressed, Svetaketu went to his father's place and said to him: Revered sir, without having instructed me, you said to me, 'I have instructed you.'
Verse 5
pañca mā rājanyabandhuḥ praśnān aprākṣīt teṣāṃ naikañcanāśakaṃ vivaktum iti sa hovāca yathā mā tvaṃ tadaitān avado yathāham eṣāṃ naikañcana veda yady aham imān avediṣyaṃ kathaṃ te nāvakṣyam iti
A fellow of the Kshatriya class asked me five questions, and I could not answer even one of them. The father said: Just as you told me about them, I myself do not know even one of them. If I had known them, why would I not have told them to you?
Verse 6
sa ha gautamo rājño'rdhameyāya tasmai ha prāptāyārhāṃ cakāra sa ha prātaḥ sabhāga udeyāya taṃ hovāca mānuṣasya bhagavan gautama vittasya varaṃ vṛṇīthā iti sa hovāca tavaiva rājan mānuṣaṃ vittaṃ yām eva kumārasyānte vācam abhāṣathās tām eva me brūhīti sa ha kṛcchrī babhūva
Gautama then went to the King's residence. When he arrived, the King received him with honor. The next morning, Gautama went to the assembly hall. The King said to him: Revered Gautama, choose a boon of human wealth. Gautama replied: Let human wealth remain with you, O King. Tell me that speech which you spoke in the presence of the boy. The King became distressed.
Verse 7
taṃ ha ciraṃ vasetyājñāpayāñcakāra taṃ hovāca yathā mā tvaṃ gautamāvado yatheyaṃ na prāk tvattaḥ purā vidyā brāhmaṇān gacchati tasmād u sarveṣu lokeṣu kṣatrasyaiva praśāsanam abhūd iti tasmai hovāca
The King commanded him to stay for a long time. Then he said to him: As you have told me, Gautama, prior to you this knowledge never went to the Brahmanas. Therefore, in all the worlds, the rule belonged to the Kshatriya class alone. Then he taught him.
Verse 8
asau vāva loko gautamāgnis tasyāditya eva samid raśmayo dhūmo'har arciś candramā aṅgārā nakṣatrāṇi visphuliṅgāḥ
Yonder world, O Gautama, is indeed the fire. Of that fire, the sun itself is the fuel, the rays are the smoke, the day is the flame, the moon is the embers, and the stars are the sparks.
Verse 9
tasmin netasminn agnau devāḥ śraddhāṃ juhvati tasyā āhuteḥ somo rājā sambhavati
Into this fire, the gods offer faith as an oblation. Out of that offering, King Soma arises.
Verse 10
parjanyo vāva gautamāgnis tasya vāyur eva samid abhraṃ dhūmo vidyud arcir aśanir aṅgārā hrādanayo visphuliṅgāḥ
Parjanya (the rain-god), O Gautama, is indeed the fire. Of that fire, the wind itself is the fuel, the cloud is the smoke, lightning is the flame, the thunderbolt is the embers, and thunderings are the sparks.
Verse 11
tasminnetasminnagnau devāḥ somaṃ rājānaṃ juhvati tasyā āhutervarṣaṃ sambhavati
In this fire, the gods offer King Soma as an oblation. From that offering, rain arises.
Verse 12
pṛthivī vāva gautamāgnistasyāḥ saṃvatsara eva samidākāśo dhūmo rātrirarcirdiśo'ṅgārā avāntaradiśo visphuliṅgāḥ
The earth, O Gautama, is indeed the fire. Its fuel is the year itself; its smoke is space; its flame is the night; its embers are the quarters; its sparks are the intermediate quarters.
Verse 13
tasminnetasminnagnau devā varṣaṃ juhvati tasyā āhuterannaṃ sambhavati
In this fire, the gods offer rain as an oblation. From that offering, food arises.
Verse 14
puruṣo vāva gautamāgnistasya vāgeva samitprāṇo dhūmo jihvārciścakṣuraṅgārāḥ śrotraṃ visphuliṅgāḥ
Man, O Gautama, is indeed the fire. Speech is his fuel; breath is his smoke; tongue is his flame; eyes are his embers; ears are his sparks.
Verse 15
tasminnetasminnagnau devā annaṃ juhvati tasyā āhute retaḥ sambhavati
In this fire, the gods offer food as an oblation. From that offering, semen arises.
Verse 16
yoṣā vāva gautamāgnistasyā upastha eva samidyadupamantrayate sa dhūmo yonirarciryadantaḥ karoti te'ṅgārā abhinandā visphuliṅgāḥ
Woman, O Gautama, is indeed the fire. Her lap is the fuel; invitation is the smoke; vulva is the flame; penetration is the embers; sexual pleasures are the sparks.
Verse 17
tasminnetasminnagnau devā reto juhvati tasyā āhutergarbhaḥ sambhavati
In this fire, the gods offer semen as an oblation. From that offering, the fetus arises.
Verse 18
iti tu pañcamyāmāhutāvāpaḥ puruṣavacaso bhavantīti sa ulbāvṛto garbho daśa vā nava vā māsānantaḥ śayitvā yāvadvātha jāyate
Thus, in the fifth oblation, water comes to be designated as 'man'. That fetus, enclosed in the amnion, lies within for nine or ten months, or whatever time, and is then born.
Verse 19
sa jāto yāvadāyuṣaṃ jīvati taṃ pretaṃ diṣṭamito'gnaya eva haranti yata eveto yataḥ sambhūto bhavati
Being born, he lives as long as his full lifespan lasts. When he dies, as ordained, they carry him from here to the fire itself, from where he came and from where he was produced.
Verse 20
māsebhyaḥ saṃvatsaraṃ saṃvatsarādādityamādityāccandramasaṃ candramaso vidyutaṃ tatpuruṣo'mānavaḥ sa enānbrahma gamayatyeṣa devayānaḥ panthā iti
From the months to the year, from the year to the sun, from the sun to the moon, from the moon to lightning—there a superhuman being leads them to Brahman. This is the path of the gods (Devayāna).
Verse 21
atha ya ime grāma iṣṭāpūrte dattam ity upāsate te dhūmam abhisambhavanti dhūmād rātriṃ rātrer aparapakṣam aparapakṣād yān ṣaḍ dakṣiṇaiti māsāṃs tān naite saṃvatsaram abhiprāpnuvanti
But those who in the village cultivate sacrificial works, public utility works, and charity pass into the smoke; from the smoke into the night; from the night into the dark fortnight; from the dark fortnight into those six months during which the sun moves southwards—they do not reach the year.
Verse 22
māsebhyaḥ pitṛlokaṃ pitṛlokād ākāśam ākāśāc candramasam eṣa somo rājā tad devānām annaṃ taṃ devā bhakṣayanti
From the months they pass to the world of the fathers; from the world of the fathers to space; from space to the moon. This is King Soma; this is the food of the gods, and the gods consume it.
Verse 23
tasmin yāvat sampātam uṣitvāthai 'tam evādhvānaṃ punar nivartante yathetam ākāśam ākāśād vāyuṃ vāyur bhūtvā dhūmo bhavati dhūmo bhūtvābhraṃ bhavati
Having dwelt there as long as their accumulated merit lasts, they return again by that very path as they came: to space, from space to air; having become air, it becomes smoke; having become smoke, it becomes mist.
Verse 24
abhraṃ bhūtvā megho bhavati megho bhūtvā pravarṣati ta iha vrīhijavā oṣadhivanaspatayas tilamāṣā iti jāyante 'to vai khalu durniṣprapataraṃ yo yo hy annam atti yo retaḥ siñcati tad bhūya eva bhavati
Having become mist, it becomes a cloud; having become a cloud, it falls as rain. Then they are born here as rice and barley, herbs and trees, sesame and beans. From this, exit is indeed extremely difficult; for whoever eats the food and sows the seed, they become just like him.
Verse 25
tad ya iha ramaṇīyacaraṇā abhyāśo ha yat te ramaṇīyāṃ yonim āpadyeran brāhmaṇayoniṃ vā kṣatriyayoniṃ vā vaiśyayoniṃ vātha ya iha kapūyacaraṇā abhyāśo ha yat te kapūyāṃ yonim āpadyeran śvayoniṃ vā sūkarayoniṃ vā caṇḍālayoniṃ vā
Among them, those whose conduct here has been good will quickly attain a good birth—the womb of a Brāhmaṇa, or a Kṣatriya, or a Vaiśya. But those whose conduct here has been foul will quickly attain a foul birth—the womb of a dog, or a swine, or an outcast.
Verse 26
athaitayoḥ pathorna katareṇacana tānīmāni kṣudrāṇyasakṛtāvartīni bhūtāni bhavanti jāyasva mriyasvetyetattṛtīyaṁ sthānaṁ tenāsau loko na sampūryate tasmājjugupseta tadeṣa ślokaḥ
Now, those who do not go along either of these two paths become these small creatures that keep revolving repeatedly, of whom it is said, 'Be born and die!' This is the third state. Therefore, that world is never filled up. Hence, one should feel disgust for this worldly existence. On this, there is this verse:
Verse 27
steno hiraṇyasya surāṁ pibaṁśca gurostalpamāvasanbrahmahā caite patanti catvāraḥ pañcamaścācaraṁstairiti
The thief of gold, the drinker of wine, the polluter of the teacher's bed, and the killer of a Brahmin—these four fall into sin, as does the fifth who associates with them.
Verse 28
On the other hand, he who knows these five fires in this manner is not tainted by evil, even though associating with those sinners. He becomes pure, cleansed, and a possessor of a virtuous realm—he who knows thus, he who knows thus.
Verse 29
prācīnaśāla aupamanyavaḥ satyayajñaḥ pauluṣirindradyumno bhāllaveyo janaḥ śārkarākṣyo buḍila āśvatarāśviste haite mahāśālā mahāśrotriyāḥ sametya mīmāṁsāṁ cakruḥ ko na ātmā kiṁ brahmeti
Prācīnaśāla Aupamanyava, Satyayajña Pauluṣi, Indradyumna Bhāllaveya, Jana Śārkarākṣya, and Buḍila Āśvatarāśvi—these five great householders and learned Vedic scholars came together and held a discussion: 'Who is our Self? What is Brahman?'
Verse 30
te ha sampādayāñcakruruddālako vai bhagavanto'yamāruṇiḥ sampratīmamātmānaṁ vaiśvānaramadhyeti taṁ hantābhyāgacchāmeti taṁ hābhyājagmuḥ
They deliberated among themselves: 'Venerable sirs, Uddālaka Āruṇi presently knows this Vaiśvānara Self well. Come, let us go to him.' And so they went to him.
Verse 31
He (Uddalaka) deliberated: These householders and great scholars will question me, and I shall not be able to tell them everything. Well, let me direct them to another.
Verse 32
tānhovācāśvapatirvai bhagavanto'yaṃ kaikeyaḥ sampratīmamātmānaṃ vaiśvānaramadhyeti taṃ hantābhyāgacchāmeti taṃ hābhyājagmuḥ
He said to them: Venerable sirs, Ashvapati Kaikeya presently knows this Vaishvanara Self. Come, let us go to him. So they went to him.
Verse 33
tebhyo ha prāptebhyaḥ pṛthagarhāṇi kārayāñcakāra sa ha prātaḥ sañjihāna uvāca na me steno janapade na kadaryo na madyapo nānāhitāgnirnāvidvānna svairī svairiṇī kutoyakṣyamāṇo vai bhagavanto'hamasmi yāvadekaikasmā ṛtvije dhanaṃ dāsyāmi tāvadbhagavadbhyo dāsyāmi vasantu bhagavanta iti
When they arrived, he arranged separate hospitality for each of them. Rising in the morning, he said: In my kingdom there is no thief, no miser, no drunkard, no person without a sacred fire, no illiterate person, and no unchaste man or woman. Venerable sirs, I am about to perform a sacrifice. I will give to each of you as much wealth as I give to each priest. Please stay, venerable sirs.
Verse 34
te hocuryena haivārthena puruṣaścaret taṃ haiva vadedātmānamevemaṃ vaiśvānaraṃ sampratyadhyeṣi tameva no brūhīti
They said: A person should state the purpose for which he comes. You currently know the Vaishvanara Self; pray teach us about that alone.
Verse 35
tānhovāca prātarvaḥ prativaktāsmīti te ha samitpāṇayaḥ pūrvāhṇe praticakramire tānhānupanīyaivaitaduvāca
He said to them: I will answer you tomorrow morning. The next morning, they approached him carrying sacrificial fuel in their hands. Without undergoing formal initiation rituals, he spoke to them.
Verse 36
aupamanyava kaṃ tvamātmānamupāssa iti divameva bhagavo rājanniti hovācaiṣa vai sutejā ātmā vaiśvānaro yaṃ tvamātmānamupāsse tasmāttava sutaṃ prasutamāsutaṃ kule dṛśyate
He asked: O Aupamanyava, which Self do you meditate upon? He replied: Heaven alone, O venerable king. Ashvapati said: This indeed is the Vaishvanara Self as Sutejas (having good light), whom you meditate upon. Therefore, in your family are seen the extraction, pressing, and continuous pressing of Soma juice.
Verse 37
atsyannaṃ paśyasi priyamattyannaṃ paśyati priyaṃ bhavatyasya brahmavarcasaṃ kule ya etamevamātmānaṃ vaiśvānaramupāste mūrdhā tveṣa ātmana iti hovāca mūrdhā te vyapatiṣyadyanmāṃ nāgamiṣya iti
You eat food and see what is agreeable. He who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is agreeable, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But this is only the head of the Self, said he. Your head would have fallen off if you had not come to me.
Verse 38
atha hovāca satyayajñaṃ pauluṣiṃ prācīnayogya kaṃ tvamātmānamupāssa ityādityameva bhagavo rājanniti hovācaiṣa vai viśvarūpa ātmā vaiśvānaro yaṃ tvamātmānamupāsse tasmāttava bahu viśvarūpaṃ kule dṛśyate
Then he said to Satyayajna Paulushi Pracinayogya: O Pracinayogya, which Self do you meditate upon? He replied: The Sun alone, O venerable king. Ashvapati said: This indeed is the Vaishvanara Self as Vishvarupa (multiform), whom you meditate upon. Therefore, manifold rich possessions are seen in your family.
Verse 39
pravṛtto'śvatarīratho dāsīniṣko'tsyannaṃ paśyasi priyamattyannaṃ paśyati priyaṃ bhavatyasya brahmavarcasaṃ kule ya etamevamātmānaṃ vaiśvānaramupāste cakṣuṣṭvetadātmana iti hovācāndho'bhaviṣyo yanmāṃ nāgamiṣya iti
A chariot drawn by mules, female servants, and gold necklaces are in your family. You eat food and see what is agreeable. He who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is agreeable, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But this is only the eye of the Self, said he. You would have become blind if you had not come to me.
Verse 40
atha hovācendradyumnaṃ bhāllaveyaṃ vaiyāghrampadya kaṃ tvamātmānamupāssa iti vāyumeva bhagavo rājanniti hovācaiṣa vai pṛthagvartmātmā vaiśvānaro yaṃ tvamātmānamupāsse tasmāttvāṃ pṛthagbalaya āyanti pṛthagrathaśreṇayo'nuyanti
Then he said to Indradyumna Bhallaveya Vaiyaghrapadya: O Vaiyaghrapadya, which Self do you meditate upon? He replied: Air alone, O venerable king. Ashvapati said: This indeed is the Vaishvanara Self as Prithagvartman (having diverse paths), whom you meditate upon. Therefore, offerings come to you from various directions, and lines of chariots follow you in diverse ways.
Verse 41

You eat food and see what is pleasing. Anyone who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is pleasing, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But this is only the breath of the Self, said the king. Your breath would have departed if you had not come to me.
Verse 42

Then he said to Jana Sarkaraksya: Sarkaraksya, which Self do you meditate upon? Space indeed, O venerable King, he replied. He said: This is indeed the manifold Vaishvanara Self whom you meditate upon as the Self. Therefore you are manifold with offspring and wealth.
Verse 43

You eat food and see what is pleasing. Anyone who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is pleasing, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But this is only the trunk of the Self, said the king. Your trunk would have disintegrated if you had not come to me.
Verse 44

Then he said to Budila Asvatarasvi Vaiyaghrapadya: Vaiyaghrapadya, which Self do you meditate upon? Water indeed, O venerable King, he replied. He said: This is indeed the wealth Vaishvanara Self whom you meditate upon as the Self. Therefore you are wealthy and well-nourished.
Verse 45

You eat food and see what is pleasing. Anyone who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is pleasing, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But this is only the bladder of the Self, said the king. Your bladder would have burst if you had not come to me.
Verse 46

Then he said to Uddalaka Aruni: Gautama, which Self do you meditate upon? The earth indeed, O venerable King, he replied. He said: This is indeed the support Vaishvanara Self whom you meditate upon as the Self. Therefore you are well established with offspring and cattle.
Verse 47

You eat food and see what is pleasing. Anyone who meditates thus on the Vaishvanara Self eats food, sees what is pleasing, and has spiritual splendor in his family. But these are only the feet of the Self, said the king. Your feet would have withered away if you had not come to me.
Verse 48

He said to them: All of you eat food, knowing this Vaishvanara Self as if it were separate. But he who meditates on the Vaishvanara Self as span-long and as measuring all things, eats food in all worlds, in all beings, and in all selves.
Verse 49

Of this Vaishvanara Self, the head is surely good light, the eye is all-form, breath is different-pathed, the trunk is the manifold, the bladder is wealth, the feet are the earth, the chest is the altar, the hair is the sacrificial grass, the heart is the Garhapatya fire, the mind is the Anvaharyapacana fire, and the mouth is the Ahavaniya fire.
Verse 50
tadyadbhaktaṁ prathamamāgacchettaddhomīyaṁ sa yāṁ prathamāmāhutiṁ juhuyāttāṁ juhuyātprāṇāya svāheti prāṇastṛpyati
Therefore, whatever food arrives first should be offered as an oblation. The first offering that one makes, he should offer saying, 'Svaha to Prana!' Thus Prana is satisfied.
Verse 51

When Prana is satisfied, the eye is satisfied. When the eye is satisfied, the sun is satisfied. When the sun is satisfied, heaven is satisfied. When heaven is satisfied, whatever is governed by heaven and the sun is satisfied. And through its satisfaction, the sacrificer is satisfied with offspring, cattle, food, splendor, and holy lustre.
Verse 52
atha yāṁ dvitīyāṁ juhuyāttāṁ juhuyādvyānāya svāheti vyānastṛpyati
Then, he should offer the second oblation, saying, 'Svaha to Vyana!' Thus Vyana is satisfied.
Verse 53

When Vyana is satisfied, the ear is satisfied. When the ear is satisfied, the moon is satisfied. When the moon is satisfied, the quarters of space are satisfied. When the quarters are satisfied, whatever is governed by the quarters and the moon is satisfied. And through its satisfaction, the sacrificer is satisfied with offspring, cattle, food, splendor, and holy lustre.
Verse 54
atha yāṁ tṛtīyāṁ juhuyāttāṁ juhuyādapānāya svāhetyapānastṛpyati
Then, he should offer the third oblation, saying, 'Svaha to Apana!' Thus Apana is satisfied.
Verse 55

When Apana is satisfied, speech is satisfied. When speech is satisfied, fire is satisfied. When fire is satisfied, the earth is satisfied. When the earth is satisfied, whatever is governed by the earth and fire is satisfied. And through its satisfaction, the sacrificer is satisfied with offspring, cattle, food, splendor, and holy lustre.
Verse 56
atha yāṁ caturthīṁ juhuyāttāṁ juhuyātsamānāya svāheti samānastṛpyati
Then, he should offer the fourth oblation, saying, 'Svaha to Samana!' Thus Samana is satisfied.
Verse 57

When Samana is satisfied, the mind is satisfied. When the mind is satisfied, the rain-god is satisfied. When the rain-god is satisfied, lightning is satisfied. When lightning is satisfied, whatever is governed by lightning and the rain-god is satisfied. And through its satisfaction, the sacrificer is satisfied with offspring, cattle, food, splendor, and holy lustre.
Verse 58
atha yāṁ pañcamīṁ juhuyāttāṁ juhuyādudānāya svāhetyudānastṛpyati
Then, he should offer the fifth oblation, saying, 'Svaha to Udana!' Thus Udana is satisfied.
Verse 59

When Udana is satisfied, the skin is satisfied. When the skin is satisfied, air is satisfied. When air is satisfied, space is satisfied. When space is satisfied, whatever is governed by air and space is satisfied. And through its satisfaction, the sacrificer is satisfied with offspring, cattle, food, splendor, and holy lustre.
Verse 60
sa ya idamavidvānagnihotraṁ juhoti yathāṅgārānapohya bhasmani juhuyāttādṛktatsyāt
If anyone offers the Agnihotra sacrifice without knowing this knowledge of the Universal Self, it would be just like removing the glowing embers and pouring the offering into cold ashes.
Verse 61
atha ya etadevaṃ vidvānagnihotraṃ juhoti tasya sarveṣu lokeṣu sarveṣu bhūteṣu sarveṣvātmasu hutaṃ bhavati
Now, he who offers the Agnihotra sacrifice knowing it thus—his offering is made in all worlds, in all beings, and in all selves.
Verse 62
tadyatheṣīkātūlamagnau protaṃ pradūyetaivaṃ hāsya sarve pāpmānaḥ pradūyante ya etadevaṃ vidvānagnihotraṃ juhoti
Just as the tuft of reed-cotton thrown into the fire is completely burnt up, even so are all the sins burnt away of him who offers the Agnihotra knowing it thus.
Verse 63
tasmādu haivaṃvidyadyapi caṇḍālāyocchiṣṭaṃ prayacchedātmani haivāsya tadvaiśvānare hutaṃ syāditi tadeṣa ślokaḥ
Therefore, if one who knows thus were to offer even the remnants of his food to an outcast (Chaṇḍāla), it would verily be offered into his own Universal Self (Vaiśvānara). Concerning this, there is this verse:
Verse 64
yatheha kṣudhitā bālā mātaraṃ paryupāsata evaṃ sarvāṇi bhūtānyagnihotramupāsata ityagnihotramupāsata iti
Just as hungry children here sit around their mother expecting food, so do all beings wait upon the Agnihotra—yes, upon the Agnihotra.
