Verse 1

omityetadakṣaramidaṃ sarvaṃ tasyopavyākhyānaṃ bhūtaṃ bhavad bhaviṣyaditi sarvamoṅkāra eva। yaccānyat trikālātītaṃ tadapyoṅkāra eva ॥

AI Translation

1 Om! This syllable is all this. A clear explanation of it is: all that is past, present and future is indeed Om. And whatever is beyond the three periods of time is also indeed Om.

Verse 2

sarvaṃ hyetad brahma ayamātmā brahma so'yamātmā catuṣpāt ॥

AI Translation

2 All this is indeed Brahman. This Atman is Brahman. This same Atman has four quarters.

Verse 3

jāgaritasthāno bahiḥprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ sthūlabhug vaiśvānaraḥ prathamaḥ pādaḥ ॥

AI Translation

3 The first quarter is Vaishvanara, whose sphere of activity is the waking state, who is conscious of external objects, who has seven limbs and nineteen mouths and who enjoys gross objects.

Verse 4

svapnasthāno'ntaḥprajñaḥ saptāṅga ekonaviṃśatimukhaḥ praviviktabhuk taijaso dvitīyaḥ pādaḥ ॥

AI Translation

4 The second quarter is Taijasa, whose sphere of activity is the dream state, who is conscious of internal objects, who has seven limbs and nineteen mouths and who enjoys subtle objects.

Verse 5

yatra supto na kañcana kāmaṃ kāmayate na kañcana svapnaṃ paśyati tat suṣuptam। suṣuptasthāna ekībhūtaḥ prajñānaghana evānandamayo hyānandabhuk cetomukhaḥ prājñastṛtīyaḥ pādaḥ ॥

AI Translation

5 That is the state of deep sleep wherein one asleep neither desires any object nor sees any dream. The third quarter is Prajna, whose sphere is deep sleep, in whom all experiences merge into one, who is verily a mass of consciousness, who is full of bliss and enjoys bliss, and who is the door leading to the knowledge of the other two.

Verse 6

eṣa sarveśvaraḥ eṣa sarvajña eṣo'ntaryāmyeṣa yoniḥ sarvasya prabhavāpyayau hi bhūtānām ॥

AI Translation

6 This is the Lord of all. This is the knower of all. This is the inner controller. This is the source of all; for this is the origin and the end of all beings.

Verse 7

nāntaḥprajñaṃ na bahiṣprajñaṃ nobhayataḥprajñaṃ na prajñānaghanaṃ na prajñaṃ nāprajñam। adṛṣṭamavyavahāryamagrāhyamalakṣaṇamacintymavyapadeśyamekātmapratyayasāraṃ prapañcopaśamaṃ śāntaṃ śivamadvaitaṃ caturthaṃ manyante sa ātmā sa vijñeyaḥ ॥

AI Translation

7 They consider the Fourth to be that which is not conscious of the internal world, nor conscious of the external world, nor conscious of both the worlds, nor a mass of consciousness, nor conscious, nor unconscious; which is unseen, beyond empirical dealings, beyond the grasp of the organs of action, uninferable, unthinkable, indescribable; the essence of the consciousness of the one Self, the cessation of all phenomena; the peaceful, the blissful, the non-dual. That is the Atman and that is to be known.

Verse 8

so'yamātmādhyakṣaramoṅkāro'dhimātraṃ pādā mātrā mātrāśca pādā akāra ukāro makāra iti ॥

AI Translation

8 This Atman is indicated by Om, viewed through the mātrās (letters). The quarters (of the Atman) are the mātrās and the mātrās are the quarters, namely, the letter A, the letter U and the letter M.

Verse 9

jāgaritasthāno vaiśvānaro'kāraḥ prathamā mātrā। āpterādimatvād vā āpnoti ha vai sarvān kāmānādiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda ॥

AI Translation

9 Vaishvanara, whose sphere is the waking state, is the first letter A, on account of its all-pervasiveness or on account of being the first. He who knows this obtains all desires and becomes the first among the great.

Verse 10

svapnasthānastaijasa ukāro dvitīyā mātrā utkarṣādubhayatvād vā utkarṣati ha vai jñānasantatiṃ samānaśca bhavati nāsyābrahmavit kule bhavati ya evaṃ veda ॥

AI Translation

10 Taijasa, whose sphere is the dream state, is the second letter U, on account of its superiority or intermediate position. He who knows this attains a higher knowledge, receives equal treatment from all and finds in his family no one who is not a knower of Brahman.

Verse 11

suṣuptasthānaḥ prājño makārastṛtīyā mātrā miterapītervā minoti ha vā idaṃ sarvamapītiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda ॥

AI Translation

11 Prajna, whose sphere is deep sleep, is the third letter M, on account of its being the measure or that into which all become merged. He who knows this is able to measure all and also comprehends all within himself.

Verse 12

amātraścaturtho'vyavahāryaḥ prapañcopaśamaḥ śivo'dvaita evamoṅkāra ātmaiva saṃviśatyātmanātmānaṃ ya evaṃ veda ya evaṃ veda ॥

AI Translation

12 The Fourth is without parts and without relationship; it is the cessation of phenomena; it is all good and non-dual. This Om is verily Atman. He who knows this merges his self in the Self — yea, he who knows this.
