They thought that the venerable Pippalâda could tell them all that, and they therefore took fuel in their hands (like pupils), and approached him.

tānha sa ṛṣiruvāca bhūya eva tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śraddhayāsaṃvatsaraṃ saṃvatsyatha yathākāmaṃ praśnān pṛcchata yadivijñāsyāmaḥ sarvaṃ ha vo vakṣyāma iti .. 1.2..

Verse 3

Verse 4

tasmai sa hovāca prajākāmo vai prajāpatiḥ sa tapo’tapyatasa tapastaptvā sa mithunamutpādayate . rayiṃ ca prāṇaṃcetyetau me bahudhā prajāḥ kariṣyata iti .. 1.4..

ādityo ha vai prāṇo rayireva candramā rayirvā etatsarvaṃ yanmūrtaṃ cāmūrtaṃ ca tasmānmūrtireva rayiḥ .. 1.5..

Verse 6

athāditya udayanyatprācīṃ diśaṃ praviśati tena prācyān prāṇānraśmiṣu sannidhatte . yaddakṣiṇāṃ yat pratīcīṃ yadudīcīṃ yadadhoyadūrdhvaṃ yadantarā diśo yat sarvaṃ prakāśayati tena sarvān prāṇānraśmiṣu sannidhatte .. 1.6..

Verse 7

sa eṣa vaiśvānaro viśvarūpaḥ prāṇo’gnirudayate .tadetadṛcā’bhyuktam .. 1.7..

saṃvatsaro vai prajāpatistasyāyane dakṣiṇaṃ cottaraṃ ca .tadye ha vai tadiṣṭāpūrte kṛtamityupāsate te cāndramasamevalokamabhijayante . ta eva punarāvartante tasmādeta ṛṣayaḥprajākāmā dakṣiṇaṃ pratipadyante . eṣa ha vai rayiryaḥpitṛyāṇaḥ .. 1.9..

Those who perform sacrifices and engage in pious actions, as duties to be done, win only the World of the Moon; verily they return hither again. Verse 10

athottareṇa tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śraddhayāvidyayā”tmānamanviṣyādityamabhijayante . etadvaiprāṇānāmāyatanametadamṛtamabhayametat parāyaṇametasmānna punarāvartantaityeṣa nirodhastadeṣa ślokaḥ .. 1.10..

Translation by Swami Sivananda10 But those who seek the Self through austerity, chastity, faith and knowledge travel by the Northern Path and win the Sun. The Sun, verily, is the support of all lives. He is immortal and fearless; He is the final goal. Thence they do not return. This path is blocked for the ignorant. pañcapādaṃ pitaraṃ dvādaśākṛtiṃdiva āhuḥ pare ardhe purīṣiṇam .atheme anya u pare vicakṣaṇaṃsaptacakre ṣaḍara āhurarpitamiti .. 1.11..

Verse 14
