Then Prajāpati asked Guha: "O Brahman, please explain the method of discerning the rosary. What are its characteristics? How many types does it have? How many threads? What is its method of construction? What are its colors? What is its consecration? Who is its presiding deity? And what is its fruit?"
Verse 2

Guha replied to him: 'Coral, pearl, crystal, conch, silver, Ashtapada (a type of gold), sandalwood, Putrajiva seeds, lotus seeds, and Rudraksha beads – these are they (the types of beads). Its form (the rosary's form) spans from 'A' to 'Kṣa' (the entire alphabet), and it should be handled with careful attention. There are three threads: golden, silver, and copper. One should place the golden thread in that specific location, the silver thread on the right side of the rosary, and the copper thread on its left side. Connecting the 'mouth' to the 'mouth' and the 'tail' to the 'tail', one should arrange them by means of internal turning/intertwining.
Verse 3

Its internal thread is Brahman. That which is on its right side is Śaiva. That which is on its left is Vaiṣṇava. Its mouth (beginning bead) is Sarasvatī. Its tail (end bead) is Gāyatrī. Its hollow (hole in the beads) is Vidyā (knowledge). The knot is Prakṛti (primordial nature). The vowels are white. The 'sparśa' (stop) consonants are yellow. The 'para' (remaining) consonants are red.

Then, having purified it (the rosary) with the five ambrosial cow-products through their five distinct applications, and having thoroughly bathed it with the five cow-products and scented water, and thereafter having bathed it with a leaf-brush while chanting Om, and having smeared it with eight kinds of fragrant substances, and having placed it in an auspicious spot, and having worshipped it with whole grains and flowers, one should directly meditate upon it with the letters from 'a' to 'kṣa'.

One who recites in the morning destroys the sin committed at night. One who recites in the evening destroys the sin committed during the day. One who practices this (recitation) both in the evening and in the morning becomes sinless from being sinful. Thus, a mantra chanted with an akṣamālā (rosary) immediately grants success, so said Lord Guha (Kartikeya) to Prajāpati. Thus is the Upaniṣad.
