Question 1

How many Upanishads are there?

Accepted Answer

There are traditionally 108 Upanishads, though over 200 texts have been identified. Of these, 10-13 are considered the Principal (Mukhya) Upanishads: Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka, Kaushitaki, Shvetashvatara, and Maitri.

Question 2

What are the Upanishads?

Accepted Answer

The Upanishads are ancient Indian philosophical texts that form the concluding part of the Vedas (Vedanta). They explore fundamental concepts like Brahman (universal consciousness), Atman (individual self), Moksha (liberation), and the relationship between the self and the universe. Written between 1500-500 BCE, they are the foundation of Hindu philosophy and Vedanta.

Question 3

Who wrote the Upanishads?

Accepted Answer

The Upanishads were composed by ancient Vedic seers (Rishis) over centuries, roughly between 1500-500 BCE. They are not attributed to a single author. Different Upanishads emerged from different Vedic traditions — for example, the Katha Upanishad from the Yajur Veda, and the Chandogya from the Sama Veda.

Question 4

What is the difference between Vedas and Upanishads?

Accepted Answer

The Vedas are the complete body of ancient Hindu scriptures, consisting of four parts: Samhitas (hymns), Brahmanas (rituals), Aranyakas (forest treatises), and Upanishads (philosophical conclusions). The Upanishads are the philosophical end-portion (Vedanta) of the Vedas, focusing on metaphysics, consciousness, and liberation rather than rituals.
